Banská Bystrica administrative region

 

Region of Banská Bystrica lies in the centre of the country and it borders on Hungary in the south. Part of this border coincides with the river Ipeľ. The natural symbol of the region is the river Hron.

 

Metropolis of the region with a rich mining history is the town Banská Bystrica. Monuments that are samples of popular architecture can bee seen in Špania Dolina andHronsek . Lovers of hiking prefer trips in the mountain range Nízke Tatry and seeing the caves Harmaneckáand Bystrianska above all in summer. The mysterious virgin forest and the romantic Čiernohronská forest railway are the main landmarks in the environs of Čierny Balog.

 

The southern part of the region is remarkable above all for numerous castle ruins (Fiľakovo, Divín, Modrý Kameň, Čabraď) and mining towns Banská Štiavnica(UNESCO monument) and Kremnica.

Bratislava administrative region

 

Region Bratislava is situated on the south-west margin of Slovakia and it is the smallest of Slovakian regions. Its southern part stretches along the Danube and borders on Hungary, the river Morava in the west coincides with the borders of Austria.

 

The core and metropolis of the region is the city ofBratislava, the Capital of the Slovak Republic. It is an important industrial, political, economic and cultural centre.

 

Present Bratislava offers multiple options of cultural, sport or recreation activities right in the town or in its close environs. International fairs and exhibitions are regularly organized here.

 

The symbol of the region is its viticultural tradition. Lovers of nature, folk art and quality wine are invited to visit the route known as the Wine Road of Malé Karpaty. The greatest attractions in the lowland Podunajská nížina are the lakes Slnečné jazerá situated on the edge of the town Senec.

Košice administrative region

 

Region Košice is situated in the southeast of Slovakia. It borders on Hungary and Ukraine in the south and east respectively.

 

The metropolis of the region and the whole eastern Slovakia is the city of Košice - the centre of commerce, trades, culture, and education of the whole region. Košice is the second biggest town of Slovakia and as such it contains numerous cultural and historic monuments.

 

The National Park of Slovenský kras lies in the southern and south-eastern part of Gemer. Its caves and abysses are included in the UNESCO monument list. Among the cultural and historic monuments the castles (Krásna Hôrka) and ruins, several manors (Betliar) and many churches scattered along the Gemer branch of the Gothic Route, dominate.

 

The historic region of the Lower Zemplín in the eastern part of administrative region Košice is known for the excellent Tokai wine. The most visited parts of Lower Zemplín include the environs of water reservoir Zemplínska šírava.

 

The natural jewel of Spiš includes the National Park of Slovenský raj. The Castle of Spiš with its environs (the biggest castle compound in central Europe, Spišské Podhradie, the ecclesiastical town Spišská Kapitula, the Gothic church in Žehra) was included into the UNESCO monuments

Nitra administrative region

 

Region Nitra is situated in the south-west of Slovakia and its southern part borders on Hungary. Its natural axis is the river Nitra that connects the northernmost and southernmost parts of the region.

 

The metropolis of the region is Nitra - the cultural and economic centre of western Slovakia. Old churches (Dražovce, Kostoľany pod Tribečom) castles (Gýmeš,Hrušov) and manor houses (Topoľčianky) complement the cultural and historical monuments of the oldest Slovak town Nitra. The exhibition area Agrokomplex is the venue of regular annual international fairs and exhibitions. Unique rock dwellings in Brhlovce are to be found in environs of town Levice. The region Nitra contains numerous thermal swimming pools, which operate all the year round (Štúrovo, Komárno and Patince).

Prešov administrative region

 

The region Prešov fills the north-eastern part of Slovakia and it stretches from the west to the east. It borders on Poland and Ukraine in the north and east respectively.

 

The metropolis of what is the biggest region of Slovakia is the town Prešov, the third biggest town in Slovakia. It is also the centre of the historic region Šariš. Its pride is the town Bardejov (UNESCO monument) with the neighbouring world famous spa Bardejovské kúpele. Šariš is also the area with greatest number of wooden churches.

 

The most attractive area in Slovakia in terms of tourism, the mountain range High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry), is also part of this region. The mountain range is visited by hikers, skiers and patients of climatic spas situated in the heart of the Tatra National Park.

 

The territory of the historic region Spiš is dotted by manors (Strážky), monasteries (Červený kláštor) and castles (Kežmarok, Ľubovňa). The natural jewels of Spiš include the National Parks of Pieniny and Slovenský raj. The Castle of Spiš with its environs (the biggest castle compound in central Europe, Spišské Podhradie, the ecclesiastical town Spišská Kapitula, the Gothic church in Žehra) was included into the UNESCO monuments.

 

Levoča is the centre of Spiš and offers a great number of architectural monuments with the biggest wooden altar in the world.

 

The upper Zemplín , the easternmost historic region of Slovakia, is coated by the typical Carpathian landscape of the Eastern Carpathian Mountains (Východné Karpaty) with original virgin woods in the National Park of Poloniny. The primeval forests of Stužica, Rožok and Havešová in the Bukovské vrchy Mts. were added to the UNESCO list of world natural heritage in June 2007 together with the Kyjov primeval forest in the Vihorlatské vrchy Mts. near Poloniny and with the primeval forests in the Ukraine.


Numerous precious Orthodox and Greek Catholic wooden churches ornament the area.

Trnava administrative region

 

Region Trnava stretches in the south-west of Slovakia and its whole western edge coincides with the border of region Bratislava. It borders with the Czech Republic and Hungary in the west and south respectively.

 

The metropolis of the region is Trnava. Its special feature is the historic core with abundant sacral monuments. Piešťany is the world-famous spa and the natural landmarks are situated in the picturesque mountain range of the Malé Karpaty (Driny cave, the karstic area of Smolenice). The region contains numerous castles (Ostrý Kameň, Korlátka, Dobrá Voda,Smolenický zámok), favourite destinations of trips.

 

The part of the region Záhorie is known for the spa in locality Smrdáky, Basilica of Šaštín and cultural and historic monuments in the town Skalica.

 

Thermal swimming pools are situated in the Danube area with the dominant Hungarian ethnicity (Dunajská Streda, Veľký Meder, Topoľníky). It also boasts numerous water mills on the river Malý Dunaj.
